Changing the Ending
If I could change the ending to a book, it would be Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
The ending is powerful and memorable, but it has always left me wishing for a different outcome for George and Lennie. Throughout the story, they hold on to a dream of owning a small piece of land where they can live independently and work for themselves. It is a simple dream, yet it represents hope, friendship, and freedom.
If I could rewrite the ending, I would have loved to see them achieve that dream. Not because life always works out perfectly, but because sometimes we need reminders that perseverance and loyalty can be rewarded. George and Lennie’s friendship is one of the strongest themes in the book, and seeing them overcome their struggles together would have offered a different kind of inspiration.
That said, perhaps the original ending is what makes the story so unforgettable. It forces readers to confront the harsh realities of life and the fragility of dreams. Even though I would change it, I understand why the author chose that path.
What book ending would you rewrite? Would you give a favourite character a second chance, a happier ending, or perhaps a completely different fate?
Be inspired. Be authentic. Be fearless. Be you.
